Because Momma Said So!

Let’s examine a sampling of Momma’s guidance:

Always wear clean underwear in case you are in an accident.

Don’t’ eat yellow snow.

Don’t talk with your mouth full.

Don’t put that in your mouth. You never know where it’s been.

Don’t tell everything you know.

Don’t stick a metal object in a light socket.

Notice that ‘Don’t’ appears five out of six  times. One job of a mother is to sound a warning, to point out pitfalls. A mother is considered successful if she keeps a child alive until he can make better judgements on his own. The Apostle Paul said in First Corinthians 13: 11 “When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways  behind me”. Where can you turn when Mom’s advice does not apply? Where can you turn when wisdom is needed for grownup situations? Using our own judgement can be faulty.  Jeremiah 17: 9 (NLT) says the human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. That sounds like a disaster waiting to happen! Since the One True God is omniscient, knowing everything in the past, present and the future, good sense would tell us to consult His wisdom book, the Bible. The book of Proverbs found in the Bible is accredited to Solomon. He had a night vision of God who told Solomon to ask for anything and it would be granted.  Wisely Solomon asked for wisdom and the knowledge to discern between good and evil in order to govern Israel. Proverbs 3: 5-6 tells us Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him and he will direct your path.
